Why Beauty In Vain?

Hi Guys! How many of you have been wondering why my blog name is Beauty In Vain? Well today I’m going give you a piece of the story.

I was dating a guy a few years back who had the habit of calling me vain anytime I’d look into a mirror. I know it was meant to be rude and slightly insulting but instead of getting upset I began using it as my screen name on my online profiles and things. Instead of breaking me down it gave me a little boost.  As time passed and that relationship ended I continued using Vain as my handle for almost everything. It stuck to the point where I’d meet people in real life and instead of addressing me by my actual name they’d call me Vain.

Don’t misunderstand, I’m not a vain person…at least I don’t think I am. In fact I used to identify more with the second definition of vain…producing no result; useless. I know it doesn’t describe a person but at a time in my life it was me and that is a story for another day.

Not So Much A Change…

Hello Beauties! Today’s post will not be my usual beauty type post. Instead it is a kind of introduction to the new content and topics that will be displayed and talked about on this blog.

Before it was Beauty In Vain my blog was ironically titled ” Currently Untitled”. I wrote about more than just beauty and fashion. In the coming weeks you will see me getting back to that. The name Beauty In Vain is not as one dimensional as it may seem and as you see more from me you will begin to understand the name and the meaning behind it.

I will still be doing beauty and fashion because I absolutely love both but I’ll also be writing on more things that affect my personal life. All this means is that I will be providing my reader with more content, more often. I cant wait to share what I’ve been working on with all of my readers.

Stay Tuned Beauties!

First Impression Friday: Maui Moisture

Hello  Beauties and Happy Friday! First Impression Fridays are back!

Today I want to talk about Maui Moisture, a vegan hair care line that I spotted while at Ulta. I wasnt sure about this product for natural hair but it was on sale so I decided to give it a try. I picked up the Heal & Hydrate+ Shea Butter line  for dry and damaged hair whose main ingredients include Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, and Macadamia Oil. Maui Moisture is made with 100% Aloe Juice and Coconut Water and is silicone free. I purchase the whole Heal & Hydrate line which includes Shampoo, Conditioner, Hair Mask, Detangler Leave-In, and a Raw Oil.

So here’s the big question: Do I like this hair care line?

I have used the shampoo and conditioner for my last two wash days so that I could give an honest “first impression” of the products. First of all I absolutely LOVE the packaging. Its so cute and reminds me of a natural fruit and veggie drink. The smell isn’t too strong like some products but it’s pleasant smell still. I like that the hair mask can be used as a deep conditioner or a leave-in. The biggest issue I have with this line is that it has NO slip. I like to detangle in the shower with a conditioner and this is really not a good product for that. The shampoo feels “dry” during washing, it doesn’t feel like its moisturizing my hair at all. The conditioner feels the same. The deep conditioning mask is a little better when it comes to slip but it still wouldn’t make it in my top 5. The detangler leave in is great as a leave in but not so great as a detangler. I suggest detangling before using these products. I use it as a daily moisturizer and it seems to be working well for that purpose. The Raw Oil is just like any other oil, nothing to get excited about. I use it to seal after moisturizing . Maui Moisture products don’t leave a lot of build up which is a plus for those who wash less often.

Would I recommend this line to other naturalistas?

I’d say give it a try and see how you like it. Its $8.99 per item and I snagged them when they were on sale buy one get one half off. Its not a huge loss if you don’t really like it. The one item that I would recommend is the Hair Mask. I do love it as a leave in and my curls did seem to have more definition after using it.

I’m going to finish the products that I have but i probably won’t repurchase anything but the hair mask.

Have you tried the Maui Moisture line? How did it work for you?

Color Correcting: A Review on NYX Color Correcting Liquid Primer

Hello Beauties! Today I am going to talk about my experience with the NYX Color Correcting Liquid Primer. I purchased this correcting primer because I thought it would help with some of my larger areas of discoloration. My first issue with this product was the consistency. Its so runny! Yes I know its liquid but I wish it were a bit thicker for easier application. It also doesn’t blend well. I saw no difference in the look of my makeup when using this primer. Honestly I feel like its just colored liquid and has no real function when it comes to priming or correcting. I did not like this product at all and would not recommend it.

I know this was a pretty short review but there’s really not much to say about a product that just doesn’t work. Maybe others have had better luck with the NYX Color Correcting Primer but for me it was just a total miss.wp-1489241631760.png

Bookworm: My 2017 Reading List

Hello beauties! In conjunction with makeup and fashion, reading is one of my all time favorite pastimes is reading. I have loved reading since I was a little girl. While others were playing with dolls I was reading Babysitters Club and Goosebumps, they had a doll collection and I had a desk piled high with books. Over the years I’ve noticed that I dont read as much as I used to. Now that Im a Mom and an entrepreneur I’ve traded in leisure reading for checking homework, cooking meals, and trying to brand myself. I promised myself that this year I would get back into reading. I may have to cut out some TV and videogaming time but hey, it’ll be worth it. A recent trip to the annual book sale in my town has given me more of a reason to get back into reading.  Here’s what I plan to read this year:

  • I Still Want It  by Derrick Jaxn
  • #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso
  • When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost: A Hip-Hop Feminist Breaks by Joan Morgan
  • How to Be Black by Baratunde Thurston
  • Nectar by Upile Chisala
  • The Conspiracy to Destroy Black Women by Michael Porter
  • Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America by Melissa V. Harris Perry

  • The Madmans Tale by John Katzenbach
  • Blow Out by Catherine Coulter
  • Intensity by Dean Koontz
  • The Murder Book by Jonathan Kellerman
  • Double Cross by James Patterson
  • Nemesis by Catherine Coulter

My list will probably grow as I see other books that interest me but for now these are the main picks. I dont have a lot of new fiction books on the list but Im making myself read whats on my shelf before I make another book purchase.

Whats on your reading list for this year?

This Could Be The One: Juice Beauty Skincare Line

Good Morning Beauties! As you may know I have been on the hunt for a product to save my dreadful skin. Previously on my post Skincare: A New Routine, I talked about a line called Juice Beauty. Juice Beauty is a skincare and makeup line that uses organic ingredients to bring out the beauty in your skin. They are also vegan, cruelty free, and USDA Certified.

I have been using 4 of the Juice Beauty products to achieve softer, more clear skin.

  • Blemish Clearing Cleanser
  • Blemish Clearing Serum
  • Oil-Free Moisturizer
  • Green Apple Peel Full Strength

I use this line of products 5 days a week in hopes to reduce my breakouts and clear up old scars and even my skin tone. You will understand why I only use it 5 out of 7 days in a later post. This is my fourth week using the Juice Beauty line and I have seen that I have less breakouts, smoother, softer skin and I do see a more even skin tone on the side of my face that doesn’t have severe dark spots. I will continue to use these products until they are gone. I hope to see even better results as I continue my skincare routine with these Juice Beauty products.

Ulta Junkie: Anastasia Beverly Hills Haul

Hello Beauties! I had to come bye and tell you all about the awesome Ulta purchase I made last week. I just discovered the greatness of Ulta this year and I quickly fell in love with shopping there. This time I decided to really splurge and get a few items from the Anastasia Beverly Hills line that Ive had my eye on for a really long time. Take a look at what I got!

First on the list is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Palette Vol 1. I love this palette so much and there are so many different shades you can make by mixing the shades already provided. The lipsticks are creamy but have a beautiful matte finish. Its worth the $48 I spent on it.

Next on the list is the Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette. The 14 colors in this palette are so pigmented and velvety! Its a great mix of mattes and shimmers and all the colors work and blend well together. Lets not forget the packaging for this palette. Its a wonderful soft pink color with a velvet texture. It feels as good as it looks.

The next item on the list is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit in Sun Dipped. These four highlight shades are soft, pigmented, and HUGE. I’m just really getting into the highlight game but I know that I like a blinding glow, these highlights will do it for you. A little will give you a great glow and if you wet them…wow. I’m so happy with this purchase.

Last on the list of Anastasia Beverly Hills goodies is the Contour Cream Kit. This is another thing that I am new to and trying to get a hang of. I got the darkest palette and I am not disappointed with the pigment. Its takes some getting used to because it can be hard to blend the cream but after its blended it looks awesome!

I will be using these palettes in future looks that I will be posting so keep and eye out for those. Also follow my Instagram for daily posts, updates, and info on future hauls, reviews, and coming very soon GIVEAWAYS!

Skincare: A New Routine

Good Morning Beauties! Today I am going to share with you my new skincare routine.

Clean, healthy skin is something we all strive for especially those of us who enjoy wearing makeup. I have been on the hunt for the perfect product for my face. I tend to break out a lot on my cheeks and forehead and i have a hard time keeping my hands off my face during a breakout. I end up picking at my face and the end result is dark spot and scars. I was using a 30% Glycolic Acid Peel but the results…or lack thereof had me looking for other options.

One day while browsing the Ulta website for new beauty products a brand called Juice Beauty caught my eye. I spotted their Green Apple Peel and grew curious as to whether or not this would be something that would be beneficial to me. After reading up on the product I learned that it was indeed something that could possibly clear up some of the imperfections on my face. After reading review after review I was sold. I purchased the full strength Green Apple Peel, the Blemish Clearing Cleanser, the Blemish Clearing Serum, and the Oil Free Moisturizer. These products are a bit pricey but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.wp-1488931964335.jpg

I have been using the products for the past week. I use the cleanser, serum and moisturizer twice a day everyday and I use the peel twice a week. This being only the first week I didn’t think I’d have any results to write about. I was wrong. In just a week I have noticed that my skin is softer and smoother. I will be doing a more in-depth review of these products as  continue to use them.

The next addition to my skincare kit is a SkinFun spinning facial cleansing brush. I grabbed this brush on Amazon for a cool $22 as a cheaper alternative to the Clarisonic. The brush comes with 3 exfoliating heads and has 3 different speed setting. I use the softest brush to wash my face in the morning and the next one up in the evenings to wash away anything left behind after I clean off my makeup using my Thayers Witch Hazel which was also purchased from Amazon.

The last addition to my new skincare routine is my Personal Microdermabrasion tool aka the PMD. I first saw this item  used by one of my favorite Youtubers, HeyParis. I trust her reviews enough that I was willing to spend $159 on this tool. I am currently only using the PMD once a week but as I get more comfortable with the tool I will bump it up to twice a week. I will be doing a more in-depth review of the PMD after I have been able to fully experience it.wp-1489232516540.jpg

I am hoping that with a healthier diet, exercise, and some stick-to-it-ive-ness I can reach the goals that I have set for my skin.

As always Id like to thank you for taking the time to read my blog and if you enjoyed this follow me and share my site with a friend!
